HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Bishop’s Flowers has been bringing smiles to faces for 27 years. Co-owner Jerry Williamson said that during this period he saw gas prices change quite a bit. He said: “In 27 years it’s fluctuated a lot, we’ve seen a lot.”
Today, AAA pegged the average price per gallon in Alabama at $3.98. That’s over 30 cents from last week.
Regarding the impact of gas prices on his business, which is primarily a delivery business, Williamson said, “It’s really affected us.”
Williamson told News 19 his company typically makes 15 to 20 deliveries a day. He said he recently had to increase his delivery charges. Although he said the increased fees only offset fuel costs.
He said: ‘Just because we had to do it doesn’t mean we’re really going to make a lot of money out of it. We are still losing money on shipping costs.
On top of that, he said his flowers take all the way to his store. Williamson said, “We go through three shipping or hauling parties, just to get you a dozen roses.”
These multiple modes of transport are also feeling the repercussions of rising fuel prices.
Although he had to make price adjustments, Williamson said, they won’t pocket that money.
“I have employees to whom I have to pay their salaries, so that they can feed their families,” he explained.
News 19 also spoke with AAA spokesperson Clay Ingram. We asked what it would take to lower gas prices.
“The first thing it will take is for the situation in Ukraine to be resolved,” he said. “That’s what creates volatility in the crude oil market around the world.”
Ingram also said people shouldn’t be afraid of gasoline shortages. He added that only a small amount of US oil comes from Russia. He said that, if anything, panic buying would be what would create shortages.
Regarding panic buying, he said: “It’s a ridiculous thing, it’s absolutely not necessary, it causes a lot of problems, it solves none of them.”
While there’s no need to fear fuel shortages, Williamson said he remains ready for anything: “I just said to my staff today, don’t let this van go below ‘half a tank of gasoline.’
